We try to attend each of ROCK’s monthly launches in Oviedo, Florida. At this month’s launch was a reporter, Caitlin Dineen, from the Orlando Sentinel newspaper. She interviewed several of the launch participants including our club’s president, Brian Coyle.
Jordan Krumbine, the Sentinel photographer, took photos of people prepping rockets for flight, launching rockets, and watching the flights. Carl Campbell, of Real Space Rockets is featured in one of the photographs.
Later the same day, Dineen’s artice, titled “Rocket Enthusiasts Find Great Heights,” appeared in the Space News section of the Sentinel’s web site. The article includes a gallery of the photographs taken by Krumbine.
For the third year in a row, JonRocket.com is attending GRITS as a vendor. GRITS is a regional launch sponsored by by SoAR (Southern Area Rocketry), a National Association of Rocketry section, serving Atlanta and North Georgia.
The launch site for GRITS, though, is in South Georgia, near Tifton. The 2016 event begins on Friday, April 1, and continues through the weekend with rockets flying from 10am to 6pm all three days.
With a waiver to 20,000 feet and support for rockets with up to N motors, many large rockets take flight at GRITS. But, the launch also supports low-power and mid-power flyers.
JonRocket.com will be at the launch all three days with a selection of model rocket kits, motors, supplies, and accessories.
If there is anything specific you would like us to bring to the event, please let us know.
Last month, USPS rate changes went into effect which increased our cost of shipping packages an average of about 10%.
This is the second major rate increase by the USPS since Bracha and I began operating JonRocket.com in 2009.
Also, since 2009, the other major carriers, UPS and FedEx, have increased rates. In particular, they made the size packages a greater factor in the cost of shipping. This especially affected us because model rocket kits and parts tend to be lightweight so the cost of shipping increased more than it would have for heavier items.
These increased costs hit us twice since we pay the shipping cost for most of the items we receive as well as the ones we ship.
So far, we have absorbed the cost of these increases with only a modest rise in our fixed shipping charge and “Free Shipping in the US for orders of $40 or more” offer.
These increases in shipping charges have forced us to increase our shipping and handling charges. Our standard shipping and handling charge is now $8.95 (about an 8%) increase. Our free shipping to US addresses now requires an order of $48 or greater. This is our first increase in shipping and handling charges since we took over JonRocket.com in 2009.
We tried to keep the increases as small as possible while still allowing us to provide the quality service that you have come to expect from JonRocket.com.

In 1970, Estes introduced the Goblin as a free kit which they included with some orders. In 1972, it appeared for sale in their catalog.
Estes recently reintroduced the kit which is available at JonRocket.com. With a 24mm motor mount and streamer recovery, the Goblin is designed for high-flying. And, with a yellow and black paint scheme and classic decals, the Goblin also looks good sitting still.

ROSCO’s launch site is an 80-acre sod farm to the east of Orangeburg which provides great terrain for launching and recovering rockets.
