USPS rate changes went into effect in January which increased our cost of shipping packages. Priority Mail rates are up an average of about 6%. The average cost for a First Class package has jumped about 12%.
The other major carriers, UPS and FedEx, have also increased rates. These increased costs affect us since we pay the shipping cost for most of the items we receive from our distributors.
In response to these increases in shipping charges, we are raising our standard shipping and handling charge for US orders by a modest amount – from $8.95 to $9.50 – about a 6% increase. Orders of $48 or greater are still shipped to US addresses for free.
We have tried to keep the increases as small as possible while still allowing us to provide the quality service that you have come to expect from JonRocket.com.
Last month, USPS rate changes went into effect which increased our cost of shipping packages an average of about 10%.
This is the second major rate increase by the USPS since Bracha and I began operating JonRocket.com in 2009.
Also, since 2009, the other major carriers, UPS and FedEx, have increased rates. In particular, they made the size packages a greater factor in the cost of shipping. This especially affected us because model rocket kits and parts tend to be lightweight so the cost of shipping increased more than it would have for heavier items.
These increased costs hit us twice since we pay the shipping cost for most of the items we receive as well as the ones we ship.
So far, we have absorbed the cost of these increases with only a modest rise in our fixed shipping charge and “Free Shipping in the US for orders of $40 or more” offer.
These increases in shipping charges have forced us to increase our shipping and handling charges. Our standard shipping and handling charge is now $8.95 (about an 8%) increase. Our free shipping to US addresses now requires an order of $48 or greater. This is our first increase in shipping and handling charges since we took over JonRocket.com in 2009.
We tried to keep the increases as small as possible while still allowing us to provide the quality service that you have come to expect from JonRocket.com.
We recently updated our international shipping policy. We added Australia and Japan to our international destinations (joining Canada and Mexico) and formalized how we handle shipping charges that are significantly different than wgat our web site adds to international orders.
For international orders, our site charges a standard shipping fee based on the cost of shipping an average package (about 1 pound, one ounce) to the destination country via Priority Mail International. We prefer using Priority Mail because it is more relliable and faster than other methods.
Sometimes our actual cost of shipping will be significantly lower than the standard shipping fee. If this is the case, we will refund a portion of the shipping fee. Our goal is that you will end up paying no more than about $5.00 over the actual cost for us to ship the package.
If the actual cost of shipping is significantly more than the standard shipping fee, we will contact you before shipping and inform you of your options which will include cancelling or changing your order. If you agree, we will send you an invoice for the additional cost of shipping and will wait to ship the order until we have received the payment.
As you probably already know, JonRocket.com offers free shipping in the US if your order totals $48 or more. No coupon code is required to take advantage of this offer. Orders under $48 pay a fixed low shipping charge.
Since we are located in Central Florida, shipping to addresses in Florida is less expensive than shipping boxes to other states. To pass on these savings to our neighbors in Florida, we are offering free shipping on orders of $20 or greater to addresses in Florida. To take advantage of this offer, your shipping address must be in Florida and you must enter the Discount Code FLORIDA at checkout.
